2001 Merrow Downs Guildford Surrey 30 June One Day Meeting
On 30 June, eighteen members met the leaders Noreen and Roy Sherlock at Merrow Downs, Guildford. The most unusual sight was a recently found Himantoglossum hircinum (Lizard Orchid), last seen on Merrow Downs in 1924 and in Surrey in 1927. A number of other orchids - Bee, Frog and Pyramidal, were seen in addition to other downland plants including Phyteuma orbiculare(Round-headed Rampion). There were a number of well-established garden escapes including Physalis alkekengi (Japanese Lantern) and self-seeded aliens including Prunus cerasifera (Cherry Plum), Ligustrum ovalifolium (Garden Privet) and several Cotoneasters.
