1998 Hanchurch Staffordshire 23 July One Day Meeting

A group of eight met in the wooded clearing near Hanchurch Hills Water Tower. The damp weather soon improved and they were able to examine the bramble flora of the surrounding area without difficulty. The late E.S. Edees, author of The Flora of Staffordshire and, jointly. Brambles of the British Isles, had described Rubus turritus from this site and the party soon found it there. Other noteworthy species seen whilst exploring the immediate area included R. accrescens, R. intensior, R. pallidus, R. rubristylus and R. sneydii.

After lunch, the party moved on to Whitmore, stopping briefly to see R. warrenii en route. R. daltrii, R. lintonii and R. murrayi were to be seen at the triangle of rough ground north of Dab Green (SJ 799422). The final stop was at Bridgemere, where Alan Newton demonstrated the features of a localised, undescribed bramble belonging to series hysterices.
