Wild Flower Society Photographic Competition Rules for 2012

With effect from the start of 2012 the following Competition Rules supersede all those previously published.

The Photographic Competition is open to all members of the Wild Flower Society.

Please refrain from submitting exact or similar images across the classes.

The photographers name and address should be clearly written on the reverse of the photograph along with the class number for which it is entered e.g. N1, M3 etc. and the plant species, location and where relevant in which country it was taken in. The photo will not be eligible without this information.

In addition, though not compulsory, a telephone and/or an email address are useful as well as any information regarding the photograph itself i.e. what camera was used, what printer and paper. These latter details are of interest.

Photographs submitted must be no smaller than 5” x 7”/125mm x 175mm and no larger than 12” x 15”/210mm x 380mm. The photos should be mounted on card with or without a border. Entrants who have not entered the competition before should enter the classes commencing with the letter N irrespective of their capability. Each entrant can submit up to 3 photographs per class.

From these three pictures I will judge which in my opinion is the best and submit that one for the final judging. Photographs of only vascular plants in their flowering, vegetative or fruiting stage are permitted along with ferns and fern allies i.e. the club-mosses (Lycopodia). Photographs of fungi and bryophytes are exempt. In The Human Element there are no restrictions of subject matter, the class title being largely self-explanatory. In Foreign Fields, it is not enough to photograph a foreign plant. I want to see ‘the foreignness’ of the plant in its habitat in the picture! Photographs received after the closing date - which will be announced in the summer magazine - may be inadmissible. However this rule is not absolute so if you anticipate a late entry let me know.

These are as follows:

N1/M1 Habitat

A photograph of a plant or plant community within its environment or locality.

N2/M2 Plant Portrait

A photograph of a plant that illustrates its uniqueness while at the same time revealing something of its ‘character’ – whatever that character might be.

N3/M3 Close-Up

A photograph that reveals in a more scientific way the uniqueness of a plant by a close-up photograph.

N4/M4 Foreign Fields

A photograph of a plant or plant community that is clearly growing or within a foreign country.

N5/M5 The Human Element

A photograph that concentrates on botanical people/personalities and/or their activities.

Mob 1

The photo should be emailed to me as an attachment or sent on a disc and I will have it printed and presented at the AGM as well as displaying it on the society’s Facebook page and web site. Accompanying the photograph/attachment should be the photographers name and address as well as the picture title or plant ID, details of the phone used and any other relevant information that may be of interest to others.

I have been tempted to introduce submission of pictures by email or by disc but have decided not to do this for the coming year.

If you have any questions on any aspect of the competition or photography in general, the mounting of prints etc etc then you can contact me by email: P.H.Jones
